Man Utd transfer news: Reporter makes revelation over Toby Alderweireld deal
MANCHESTER UNITED never made a bid for Tottenham defender Toby Alderweireld in the summer transfer window.
Jose Mourinho: I want to focus on the players that are available
That is according to Premier League commentator and ESPN FC pundit Ian Darke.
Alderweireld was linked with a move to Manchester United throughout the last few months.
United were keen on signing a centre-back and were also interested in Leicester’s Harry Maguire.
Alderweireld was made available by Tottenham though as he has entered the final year of his contract.
That looked the easiest deal to do you would have thought, but apparently there was not even a bid for him
Spurs have an option to extend the Belgian’s current deal by one year but he would then be available for just £25million next summer.
Darke reckons Alderweireld would have been the easiest target for United to go after.
And that is why he is surprised the Red Devils did not even make an official offer for him.
“Well you do wonder what’s going on behind the scenes because this is mysterious and curious that Manchester United have been so quiet,” Darke said.
Alderweireld joins Tottenham Hotspur for pre-season training
“Jose Mourinho turned up at the press conference this (Thursday) morning and said there would be no signings today.
“They were linked with Harry Maguire, they were linked with Alderweireld, the Tottenham Hotspur defender.
“That looked the easiest deal to do you would have thought, but apparently there was not even a bid for him.
“So what went on there I really don’t know.”
