Fernando Alonso to Mercedes? Former F1 driver makes HUGE Lewis Hamilton claim
FERNANDO ALONSO is not inferior to Lewis Hamilton, and would thrive at Mercedes, according to former Toro Rosso driver Jean-Eric Vergne.
Could Fernando Alonso be joining Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes?
The Spaniard's McLaren team have endured a tough start to 2018 so far, failing to finish around the podium places since Melbourne, where Alonso finished fifth.
Team-mate Stoffel Vandoorne managed an eighth-place finish in Baku last time out after three successive 14th-place efforts.
This has fuelled talk of Alonso leaving the F1 outfit at the end of the season.
And Vergne thinks the 36-year-old would not be out of place alongside Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel.
"I think McLaren has huge pressure," he said.

"Fernando told me that the team is preparing a lot of new parts for Barcelona, which would also be good for Stoffel Vandoorne.

Max Verstappen has also been linked to Mercedes in recent months
Alonso has been linked with a switch to American outfit Haas in recent weeks.
Meanwhile, rumours have been swirling that Valtteri Bottas will leave Mercedes, meaning Hamilton will be in need of a new partner.
Max Verstappen is one of the names linked with the Northamptonshire-based team.
