Fred Vasseur piled more misery on 1997 F1 world champion Jacques Villeneuve, telling the Canadian racer that he is ‘sometimes wrong’ after he started to explain his pre-race position on Ferrari’s competitiveness. The Scuderia endured a miserable Saturday with both Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz failing to make Q3.

Villeneuve, who has a reputation for his bold takes and unfiltered approach to speaking his mind, was chatting to Vasseur alongside fellow pundits Danica Patrick and Simon Lazenby. “Before the weekend, I was convinced that Ferrari…” he said, before the Ferrari team principal cut in: “Yeah, but sometimes you are wrong.”

Ferrari were tipped as heavy favourites heading into the Canadian Grand Prix following Leclerc’s fairytale victory at his home track in Monte Carlo two weeks prior, but the Italian constructor struggled to live up to their billing during FP3, and their troubles spilt over into qualifying later on Saturday.

In the end, Leclerc and Sainz were forced to settle for P11 and P12 grid slots respectively after a strategy error left both drivers out on used tyres for their final Q2 runs. Ferrari are expected to show better pace on race day, but their star driver was still fuming when he climbed out of the cockpit.

F1 Grand Prix of Canada - Qualifying

Vasseur, however, did not lose his cool. Speaking to Sky Sports F1 after the race, he said: "It's tight. At the end of the day, Perez is 16th and for one or two tenths you can be out.

"Carlos was three tenths faster than Charles in the last corner [before] he made a mistake. It is like it is but we have to be pleased with the fact that the fight is so tight.”

While the Ferrari team principal stayed cool, Villeneuve’s weekend has been far from controversy-free. The 53-year-old took aim at Daniel Ricciardo ahead of qualifying, probing: "Why is he still in F1? Why? We're hearing the same thing now for the last four or five years. We have to make the car better for him... poor him.' Sorry, it's been five years of that.”

Ricciardo responded with equal vigour though, stating: "I’ve just been told. I don’t listen or read, but there’s definitely some people out there who... whatever.

"I won’t give them the time of day. Top five, I’ve been quick all weekend, less than two tenths from pole. So, eat s***."
