Mick Schumacher reveals F1 plans ahead of announcement: ‘We’re talking to teams’
MICK SCHUMACHER, son of racing legend Michael, says he will make a decision on Formula One in the ‘coming weeks.’
Mick Schumacher reflects on winning Formula 3 European title
Schumacher has only just finished the F3 season in which a stunning run of six wins from eight races towards the end of the campaign meant he clinched the title by 57 points.
Many expect the 19-year-old to one day follow in his father’s footsteps but being so young might mean it’s a couple of years before he reaches F1.
Schumacher has revealed he plans to announce his decision in the coming weeks, admitting he is in talks with some teams over a prospective move.
“Am I ready for Formula 1? I prefer to move forward gradually, step by step, preparing really well,” he said.
We are talking to some teams and putting together the best strategy for next year
“So it’s important to always make the right decision.
“We will decide in the coming weeks.
“Every driver has the goal of being in Formula 1, it’s the premier class and to stand up to the best there is the optimum.
“We are talking to some teams and putting together the best strategy for next year.”
Winning the F3 championship has granted Schumacher a super-license and a pass onto the F1 circuit.
Schumacher has been linked with Toro Rosso in recent weeks having previously seen talk of joining Ferrari make headlines.
But Ross Brawn, who worked alongside Michael during his racing career that saw him win a record seven titles, believes a step up to F1 might be too soon for the young talent.
“He has a few more steps to make before he joins Formula 1,” he told TASS.
“Mick is a very mature young man and I think he knows he has to pace himself, make sure that he is completely ready to join Formula 1.
“The name of Schumacher carries a lot of history.
“If he merits and if he wants to be fully prepared before he makes his step into Formula 1, I think Formula 2 is the next logical step for Mick.
“Hopefully he can come into Formula 2, to learn the tracks more.
“Because of the integration we now have between the Formula 2 and Formula 1 – much closer integration that he can start to become familiar with the Formulae environment.
“I am delighted that he is performing as much as he is, because it brings back some very fun memories.”
