F1 Russian Grand Prix qualifying results IN FULL: Lewis Hamilton misses out on pole
LEWIS HAMILTON missed out on pole position as he finished second in Russian Grand Prix qualifying.
Valtteri Bottas set a rapid first lap where he was four milliseconds quicker than his team-mate Hamilton. He then extended that lead further later in the session.
Hamilton will not be too disheartened as he will also start on the front row - ahead of Sebastian Vettel, who could only secure a third-placed finish.
With limited overtaking opportunities in Sochi, Hamilton is expected to now extend his 40-point lead over Vettel in the standings.
Fellow Ferrari driver Kimi Raikkonen will complete the top four while Red Bull pair Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen are two of five drivers forced to start from the back of the grid because of engine penalties.
“Firstly congratulations to Valtteri. He has been driving well all weekend and just did the better job,” Hamilton said.
“It is a great track and the weather is fantastic. We have a great crowd but my last two laps were not special at all.
“You cannot always get it right and I am still in the fight for the race tomorrow.
“The team are doing an amazing job so really happy with the one-two.”
