F1 news: Kevin Magnussen launches SCATHING attack on ‘disrespectful’ Fernando Alonso
KEVIN MAGNUSSEN can’t wait for Fernando Alonso to retire as the Haas driver launched a scathing attack on his Formula One rival following a coming together in qualifying for the Italian Grand Prix.
Magnussen was involved in a bizarre incident with Alonso during qualifying today.
Both drivers were preparing for their final hot lap in Q2 when they got involved in a race of their own.
They entered the first chicane side-by-side after Alonso had chased down Magnussen through Parabolica.
The duo were then involved in a heated game of cat and mouse as neither driver let up their position.
In the end, both their respective laps were compromised leaving Magnussen 11th and Alonso 13th for tomorrow’s race.
Tensions were clearly still running high after the session with Alonso calling Magnussen “not very clever”.
And Magnussen didn’t mince his words in response to Alonso’s comments, pointing to the Spaniard’s impending retirement at the end of the year.
“He thought he could overtake into turn one, but I’d rather hang myself,” Magnussen said.
“I’m not going to let him past me and sacrifice my own lap. No way.
“He thinks he’s God, but no way. I can’t wait for him to retire.”
He added: “I think we know that Fernando is a bit of an opportunist.
“We’ve seen that about him quite a few times in his career with his teams as well trying different things that didn’t always work out.
“It didn’t work out today.
“He came to me after qualifying and laughed to my face. It's just outright disrespectful.”
The incident was investigated by stewards after the qualifying session but they deemed no punishment was necessary.
