Sebastian Vettel REFUSES to reveal reason for anger as Kimi Raikkonen steals pole at Monza
SEBASTIAN VETTEL has admitted he wasn’t happy after finding out he finished P2 in qualifying for Monza this afternoon behind Kimi Raikkonen, but refused to divulge further his cryptic radio message.
In a pulsating final qualifying session, Vettel thought his last lap was quick enough for him to secure pole position for tomorrow’s race.
He could be heard celebrating on the radio, but his joy was cut short when his team informed him that Raikkonen had in fact finished quickest.
The German’s tone in his voice quickly changed as he simply said: “We speak after.”
Raikkonen appeared to benefit from a “tow” behind his Ferrari team-mate for both of his Q3 laps.
Following the qualifying session, Vettel was asked what he meant by the radio message but he chose not to disclose what he wanted to discuss.
“Clearly I wasn't happy but I don't tell you why,” he said.
He added: ”We have an order that changes every weekend and this weekend it was Kimi's turn to go second [out the pits].”
It was Raikkonen’s first pole of the season, with Vettel starting tomorrow’s race just ahead of title rival Lewis Hamilton.
Vettel’s final lap was hampered when he made an error through the first chicane and he wasn’t happy with his overall performance.
“To be honest it was not a tidy lap and I think the other laps were actually better ones," he said.
“I lost time pretty much everywhere.
“It was just not a good lap and not good enough.
“[I’m] lucky to get second and not third, but it's just not good enough."
Vettel enters tomorrow's race 17 points behind championship leader Hamilton with both drivers winning five races apiece this season so far.
Elsewhere Daniel Ricciardo will start the race from the back of the grid after taking a completely new engine.
Valtteri Bottas sits alongside Hamilton on the second row with Max Verstappen fifth on the grid.
