Boxing news: Tyson Fury SHUNS Anthony Joshua by setting date for Deontay Wilder rematch
TYSON FURY has predicted that his rematch with Deontay Wilder will take place in December, which is likey to mean a possible bout with Anthony Joshua won’t take place until at least 2020.
Tyson Fury has spoken out on claims that he avoided facing Deontay Wilder in the next few months, and delivered a scathing assessment of his rival’s ability.
Fury is set to take on Tom Schwarz in the first fight of his multi-million-pound deal with ESPN and Top Rank Boxing, which meant he and Wilder missed out on an instant rematch.
The Gyspy King has now pleased fans by predicted when the pair will meet again, and chose later this year, shunning Joshua in the process.
“I think 2019. I think December we’re gonna see the rematch,” Fury told Behind the Gloves.
“We’re gonna see me kick his ass again. This time though, he won’t be able to live with me.
“I’d just had two little fight comebacks [before the first meeting between the pair].
“I’ve been back well over a year [now], I’m strong at the weight and I don’t have to lose any weight.
“He had his biggest opportunity of his life to beat me and he couldn’t do it.”
Fury, 30, didn’t fight in 2016 or 2017 and let his weight increase dramatically.
Although he beat Sefer Seferi and Francesco Pianeta before taking on Wilder, Fury is adamant that he was far from his peak.
“Never again will he have that opportunity of a Tyson Fury only 40 per cent of what he should be," he continued.
“After three years out the ring of drug and alcohol abuse, and mental health problems, and ten stone weight loss.
“And he still couldn’t beat me. How much better am I than these guys?”
Fury also dismissed claims that he was planning to retire after his next three fights, and put the reports down to a misunderstanding.
“I didn’t say retirement,” Fury explained, “I said I’d be gone. I said I was gonna have three fights and I’d be gone.
“I meant I’d be gone for the year and have some time off!
Tyson Fury: Nelson CONFIRMS rematch with Deontay Wilder
“I have a five-fight deal, so unless I’m gonna jack after three fights – I don’t think so!
“I’m only a young pup, I’ve only just started to come into my career – my second career.
“I’ve only had a few fights back so yeah, this is the fourth defence of my ‘lineal’ championship of the world.
“I’m really looking forward to it.”
