The 51-year-old brain box - also known as the Beast - recognised contestant Mel from his previous TV appearances on quiz shows.
He told host Bradley Walsh: “Well, I’ve never met Mel but I know about him. Bradley, his gold handicap is not the only thing he’s been telling fibs about.”
Bradley, 57, seemed concerned: “Really? Really? Why? Why? What’s happened?”
“He’s a serial Mastermind contender and I believe you were a Mastermind finalist,” Mark told him.
Mel looked a tad uneasy but conceded: “Well, I was in 1995.” The Beast quipped: “So, I’m facing quizzing royalty here.”
His words led the retired steel worker from Scarborough to burst out laughing as Bradley said: “I had no idea, your royal highness!” and gave Mel a quick bow.

It appeared that Mel’s fiendishly clever quiz experience and vast knowledge helped him get through to the final round of the competition after he took £7,000 through with him after beating the Beast in the head-to-head chase.
Today’s episode of The Chase - which is a repeat - proved to be a tense watch with a close final round that could have gone either way.
Luckily, the four-member team got as many steps in front and managed to get a total of 21 steps ahead of the Chaser which worked in their favour.

Thanks to four push backs, the team managed to beat the Beast as he failed to catch up with them.
The team walked away with £17,000 between them as the Beast looked fairly unimpressed at their victory.
“I really enjoyed that as you may have noticed from the smile on my face,” Mark told them grimly.
