Bosses have reportedly opened talks with the legendary hitmaker as it has emerged that the former Pussycat Doll is yet to sign a new contract.
With filming set to start next month, Nicole is the only judge from the past series not to renew her deal on the ITV talent show.
However, it has now emerged that Mariah, 47, is said to be "really keen" for the judging role, having previously completed a stint on American Idol.

Nicole is not committing at the moment, although she did meet up with Simon Cowell this week
A source told The Mirror: "Mariah really wants to do it. Nicole is not committing at the moment, although she did meet up with Simon Cowell this week."
Earlier in the week, Louis Walsh revealed that he would be returning alongside Sharon Osbourne and Simon.
However, he teased that a potential lead role in Wicked could stop Nicole, 38, from reprising her role.
Louis said: "I hope everyone is on board this year, but I have heard Nicole has not signed. She might be getting a big movie like Wicked."
Louis, Sharon and Simon will all be back for the next series
The 64-year-old does have an opinion on who should replace her should the issue arise.
Louis added: "Mel B's done it before, so would be good, and she's currently on the US show with Simon."
A representative from The X Factor told Express.co.uk: "No formal decision has yet been made regarding the full judging panel for The X Factor 2017."
