BBC Breakfast faces ‘old’ news backlash with fans slamming ‘long segment’

BBC Breakfast faced backlash as viewers complained of a “long” news item which had already been covered earlier in the week.

Presenters Roger Johnson and Nina Warhurst were on hand to host this morning’s show, introducing an extended segment focusing on the centenary celebrations of The Old Marylebone Town Hall.

Tuesday, October 1, marked the anniversary of the venue’s first marriage and so to mark the occasion, 100 ceremonies, costing each couple just £100, took place over 14 hours.

Roger said: “You may have seen this story this week, for 100 years, it’s been the venue where thousands of people have got married, celebrities included, Sir Paul McCartney, Liam Gallagher and Vicky Pattinson, have all said ‘I do’ at Old Marylebone Town Hall in central London.”

Nina then added: “Now last week, the venue held 100 wedding ceremonies to mark the occasion and BBC News was there to witness them all.”

The BBC segment then saw journalist Charlotte Gallagher venturing around the town hall, speaking to couples about their love stories and why they wanted to get married at this venue.

And while it was clearly an emotional day for many, viewers weren’t pleased to see something that was covered at the beginning of the week, return for the Sunday slot.

Taking to X, formerly Twitter, someone wrote: “No new news then”, with another annoyed viewer writing: “What a f****** load of old s***”.

Someone else posted:“Spare us this guff on weddings, it’s already been done to death.”

Whereas a fourth simply asked: “Is there no news.”

Another complained: “Christ this is a long segment”, with others wishing for the return of technology programme Click which no longer airs.

They commented: “I’ve never missed Click so much in my life…can’t believe I’m saying that”, with a fellow viewer agreeing: “Not the weddings again Jesus wept…where’s Click?”.
