Speaking to The Sun, the former Friends star also added that he only heard about Chris’ departure after reading about it in a newspaper.
“I did not know what was coming until I read that in the paper,” Matt confirmed.
He added: “And also I haven’t heard from him since - which is his choice.”
Viewers thought that the pair did not get along outside of filming, but Matt was quick to note that they had a good relationship.
He explained: “I saw the stories that we weren’t getting along and there was a row between us, but we were fine.

Matt is staying on for a new series with a new team

“I liked Chris Evans. I think my schedule is tough, but he was doing a radio show every morning, and that was a lot to deal with. Maybe that was what it was - I honestly don’t know,” he continued.
The 49-year-old was recruited as co-host last February after Chris had already been confirmed.
He hit headlines before the show even started after Matt and Ken Block drove “donut” rings around the Cenotaph war memorial in London.
Speaking of the incident, Matt said: “I have never spoken about this publicly but the route was planned, it was signed off by all the appropriate authorities and we didn’t veer off the call sheet.
Chris Harris and Rory Reid will join Matt for the new series
The trio are reportedly getting along well during filming
“If we could go back, knowing what people’s reactions would be, then I don’t think we’d do it again.
“I certainly didn’t mean to disrespect anything like that - a war memorial - and people did seem really upset by it and I apologise for that. It was absolutely unintentional. We were just making a car film,” Matt explained.
He will now take over Chris' role on the BBC show, leading a new trio of presenters which includes Chris Harris and Rory Reid.
Speaking of the new series, Matt revealed: “All the films are shot and the filming has been really fun. It has a bigger, broader, more ambitious feel.”
Top Gear returns to BBC Two on March 5 at 8pm.
