Val's (Charlie Hardwick) life came to an end when a helicopter crashed into the village hall, leaving her trapped beneath the rubble.
As her sister Diane was rescued by emergency services, she noticed a shard of glass hanging above her.
Knowing that it could fall and kill her, she lit a cigarette and said she wasn't afraid of death as her HIV diagnosis had made her strong.
Viewers were devastated as the shard of glass fell and appeared to kill her.

The star hinted that Val may not be dead because viewers didn't see a body
But now Matthew Wolfenden, who plays Val's stepson David Metcalfe, has hinted she may still be alive.
Speaking to Inside Soap, he explained: "Charlie was brilliant and I think the whole show misses her.
"Emmerdale needs a character like Val. But have they really killed her off? Chris Chittell (Eric) says we never saw Val's body – just a body bag being carried away.
"And Val was planning on faking her own death! We'll see. But I learned so much from Charlie, she's incredible. We share a love of art, so we still keep in touch."

Speaking at the time about her dramatic exit, Charlie revealed that she would have been furious if her exit was HIV-related.
She told the Loose Women panel: "I’d be very angry if it was HIV-related. I think the whole point of having Val as HIV positive is to show you can live a healthy, happy life.
"There’ll be hell to pay if they go that way."
Emmerdale continues tonight on ITV at 7pm.
