Nicholas Lyndhurst to reprise role of Gary Sparrow in one-off Goodnight Sweetheart special
ACCIDENTAL time traveller Gary Sparrow, portrayed by Nicholas Lyndhurst, will be returning to TV screens for a Goodnight Sweetheart revival.
Goodnight Sweetheart is set to return to the BBC for a one-off episode
It is one of many classic comedy favourites to be resurrected for the BBC's landmark sitcom season, which also features the likes of Are You Being Served?, Porridge and Keeping Up Appearances.
The 90s sitcom, which ran for six series, follows former TV repairman Gary who leads an extraordinary double life after discovering a time portal leading to Second World War-era London.
Only Fools And Horses star Lyndhurst has not played the role since the show came to a close in 1999.
Show creators and writers Laurence Marks and Maurice Gran have teased that the one-off episode will see Gary go somewhere he has never been before.
The series also starred Dervla Kirwan
The series saw Lyndhurst's character jump through time to two different women
The conceptual update is sublime and it was heart-skipping stuff to read - it's an absolute belter
"Gary has been trying for the last 17 years to find a way back to the present. Now he's found one, and he's asked us to turn it into a TV show, featuring much-loved old Goodnight Sweetheart friends and one or two new ones," the writers said in a joint statement.
In the last episode of the series Gary admitted to his present-day wife Yvonne that he has been able to travel through time to the 1940s. He makes a trip back to celebrate VE Day after which he discovers that the time portal has closed and he can't return to his wife.
Executive producer Jon Rolph said of the revival: "I've long been keen to catch up with the life and various times of Gary Sparrow, so it's an absolute delight to see Goodnight Sweetheart take its place in the landmark sitcom season."
The season is set to begin in the autumn.
