FOOD: The Supersizers Go...Wartime, 9pm, BBC2
FOOD critic Giles Coren and presenter Sue Perkins team up for this new six-part series that sees them going back in time to sample the lifestyle and diets from six different eras in Britain’s history – Elizabethan, Restoration, Regency, Victorian, Wartime and the Seventies.
This week, they experience the culinary delights served up on the Home Front during the Second World War.
Throughout the six years of hostility, housewives took their rationed recipe tips from the specially-created Ministry of Food.
To help Coren and Perkins through their week living on the breadline is chef and food writer Allegra McEvedy, whose powdered scrambled egg breakfast goes down a treat but her mock duck dinner made from sausage meat is described by Perkins as “horrid”.
The couple endure blackouts and an air-raid picnic as they bed down in the Underground.
They also tempt youngsters with some wartime classics.
