I watched twisty Netflix true crime series dubbed 'sickening' it's your next binge-watch

I tuned into one of the most chilling yet addictive true-crime series ever and it is currently available to stream on Netflix. Fans of the genre have dubbed the documentary "truly sickening," and I for one don't disagree.

"Worst Ex Ever" is a gripping anthology series about relationships that have gone horribly wrong. Based on the same premise as "Worst Roommate Ever," each episode features reenactments, body cam footage, police interviews and more about the terror unleashed on unbeknownst victims when romance suddenly turns deadly. What makes the true-crime series even more gripping are the stories told from the perspectives of the survivors.

While scrolling through Instagram, I came across a clip of a young woman who had just found out her husband of over a decade had welcomed a baby with another woman. The algorithm seemed to believe I needed more relationship disaster content when the Netflix series suddenly popped up on my feed. So I decided to check it out.

The first episode is all about a man, who would go on to be known as "The Deadpool Killer". Wade Wilson, who shares the same name as the Marvel superhero portrayed by Ryan Reynolds in several film adaptations, not only has an extensive criminal record but would use his good looks to charm any woman or man in his presence. Cue Ted Bundy.

While not giving away too many spoilers, Wilson brutally murdered two women within hours of each other and was sentenced to death in 2024. He had a criminal history dating back to 2012, including convictions for burglary, grand theft, and firearms offenses.

A very unsettling part of the documentary besides the tragic deaths of his two victims, was how people reacted once the story broke and pictures of Wilson were released to the public: people were salivating over him, sending him money, creating fan pages and trying to be his girlfriend.

Despite his horrific confessions and bizarre facial tattoos, thousands of people romanticised him. Supporters sent him letters and marriage proposals, completely ignoring the fact he had committed murder.

They seemingly dismissed his extreme acts of violence, blinded by his physical appearance which was aptly dubbed the "Wade Wilson halo effect" - a cognitive bias where a person's physical attractiveness causes others to subconsciously dismiss any negative qualities.

Or what others may simply call "pretty privilege," where a conventionally attractive person can often receive social, economic or professional advantages over others.

But whatever the reason behind it I was truly disturbed. Wilson was not only able to charm women and cops alike but it's a sad state of affairs when one officer in particular didn’t act when they had the chance.

Viewers who have tuned into the series shared their thoughts; one wrote, "Season 2 is super engrossing and I love how the animation is more expressive this time around. I could watch twenty seasons of this show!!"

Another commented, "Blumhouse delivers another hit. Wow this season was so addicting. It's a must watch!!! I want MORE!" A third added, "Truly sickeneing".
