An ongoing Emmerdale storyline has prompted viewers to tune out.

The ITV soap has been examining workplace bullying through trainee Jacob Sudgen (Joe-Warren Plant) and his mentor Doctor Caitlin Todd (Caroline Harker).

Dr Todd has been relentlessly criticising and identifying flaws in her student, and matters recently escalated with her relocating to the village, blurring the boundaries between Jacob's professional and personal life.

During Monday's (May 11) episode, Jacob was left frightened in Emmerdale today, as Dr Todd made it apparent her campaign against him remains ongoing.

Last week, Jacob was at the hospital and witnessed his bullying superior delivering a speech before their colleagues. He became irritated and presumed Doctor Todd was boasting about her own excellence.

Upon entering the room, Jacob was taken aback to discover it was her farewell address, following her choice to take early retirement.

Arriving home, Jacob concluded that he needn't report Doctor Todd now as she'd be departing the hospital and consequently his ordeal would shortly end.

In the most recent episode, Dr Todd was preparing for her father's funeral and in a bid to resolve matters, Jacob presented her with some flowers and expressed his hope they could now progress. The moment Jacob departed though, Dr Todd discarded the flowers onto the sofa.

Following the funeral, Dr Todd was in the shop alongside Vanessa Woodfield (Michelle Hardwick). Vanessa extended an invitation for drinks, which the doctor accepted, further winning Vanessa over by assisting with her shopping. As Jacob scanned the items, he emphasised his wish to put their longstanding feud behind them.

Dr Todd then began discussing her early retirement and the abundance of free time she now enjoys. To Jacob's astonishment, Dr Todd then suggested she might use this newfound spare time to make Jacob's life "as hellish" as when they worked together.

Already unsettled, Jacob was left stunned when Caitlin added "especially with what I know" with a smirk on her face. Viewers flocked to social media to voice their opinions on the storyline and the revelation that it is far from finished.

Posting in an Emmerdale Facebook group, one viewer wrote: "I won't watch again until Dr Todd is gone." Another concurred: "Can't stand her! Putting me off watching."

A third viewer commented: "She is making me want to switch off. She is ruining the show for me." A fourth fan added: "Worst storyline ever. Hope it's over soon."

The secret Caitlin holds relates to the fact that baby Leyla is not actually Jacob and Sarah Sugden's (Katie Hill) child. Following the birth, Caitlin managed to deduce that supposed surrogate Charity Dingle (Emma Atkins) is in fact the biological mother, as a result of a one-night stand with her former partner Ross Barton (Michael Parr).
