Good Morning Britain ground to a halt minutes into the breakfast show as they issued a major breaking news alert coming from Parliament. On Tuesday (May 12), Ed Balls and Susanna Reid returned to the airwaves to deliver the latest news hitting the headlines. It didn't take long for things to turn political as Sir Keir Starmer prepares a tense Cabinet meeting this morning following threats to his leadership.

Despite a last-ditch effort to rally his party during his 'reset' speech on Monday (May 11), four government aides have quit, and more than 70 Labour MPs are now publicly calling for his departure from No. 10. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood has also demanded the Labour leader set out a timetable for his resignation as pressure mounts on the 63-year-old politician.

To get a better understanding of the latest developments from No. 10, the presenting duo welcomed political correspondent Louisa James onto the show, who reported live from Downing Street. Ed began by asking the broadcaster if she believes this could be Starmer's last few weeks in power.

She declared: "I've stood out here over the last two years, even more so over the last few weeks and months, talking about whether it's time for Keir Starmer to go, and every time we think it might be the end, he has had another stay of execution. But this morning, in all honesty, it does feel different; it does feel like we might be in the end game, in that things could come to a head within hours.

"The weekly cabinet meeting is due to take place as normal at 9:30am. Frankly, it feels as though it's going to be anything but normal. Downing Street have insisted that the main item on the agenda is the Middle East response, but surely it is going to be dominated by that question of whether the Prime Minister should stay or go.

"This is especially important as my understanding is that the Home Secretary, Shabana Mahmood, has told him that she thinks that he should resign or at least set out a timetable. Other cabinet ministers are thought to have had more nuanced conversations with him, and some are actually calling for him to stay."

It didn't take long for fans to flock to X - formerly known as Twitter - to have their say on the latest update online. One user penned: "Labour is done not just Keir Starmer, no confidence and a general election is needed. It's obvious the country has had enough!"

Another agreed: "Am I missing something here? Didn't 70 Labour MPs support every major change Starmer pushed through as PM? Now, instead of accepting the result and calling for a national referendum, some of those same Labour MPs are turning around and blaming their own leader."

A Third fumed: "If anyone bothered to ask the voters, we don't want another PM without a general election. Labour MPs need to stop the media briefings and get back to what we pay them for."

GMB airs weekdays at 6am on ITV1.
