Europa League Football: Man City v Lech Poznan
YOUR Barcelonas and your Real Madrids are all very well, but one of the joys of European football is learning about lesser-known clubs.
Tonight, for example, Roberto Mancini’s Manchester City face Polish side Lech Poznan. “Who?!” you exclaim. Well, precisely.
A little research reveals that the visitors were established in 1922 as Lutnia Dębiec and that for many years had links with Polish State Railways – earning the nickname The Railwaymen.
Having said that, I got this information from the less than wholly reliable website Wikipedia, so they may well be nicknamed The Pilchards and hail from Wolverhampton.
Anyway, both sides have four points from their first two Europa League games, so we can expect a close encounter. Jim Rosenthal is our host.
