Netflix upcoming action flick Sacrifice sees Captain America star Chris Evans play Mike Tyler, a movie star kidnapped by Anya Taylor-Joy's zealot Joan who is part of a radical group that believes that by sacrificing three people, it will save humanity. The star studded cast also includes John Malkovich, Salma Hayek and music star Charlie XCX. While a release date is yet to be announced, it is sure to have people flocking to visit the idyllic location it was filmed in.

The movie was shot on the Greek island of Santorini from November 26th to December 10th, 2024. They utilised the area's Nea Kameni Volcano National Geological Park, which features a live crater, the beautiful Vlyhada Beach, and the island’s iconic caldera. According to sources the production was a "significant undertaking" for Santorini, which has long been a popular holiday location and is described as the "most Instagrammable island in Greece". Express.co.uk visited in May taking in the volcano, which features heavily in the movie and has spectacular views at the top. It is accessible by ferry/boat and there are many day trips or connections available.

There is an entrace fee of €5 as it is a heritage site. The path to the top is clearly marked and there are brochures available to give you the history of the volcano along with information points en route. However a guided tour is useful as you will get far more local colour from it.

The ground is uneven - after all it is not a man made footpath and there are some very steep sections so be prepared for this. Closed toe shoes are advised and flip flops are definitely a no no for the walk. On the day I visited it was also extremely windy and very chilly at the top despite the sun splitting the sky down below so also bring a cover up.

It is advised to bring water and even if it doesn't seem like an epic trek you will find you will need it. Although there are rest points with seating there are also no bathrooms on site so you have been warned.

At just 130m above sea level the hike isn't as duanting as it may first appear, and you are rewarded for your efforts at the top with stunning views - and you will put a serious dent in your step count for the day.

The production was a significant undertaking, complete with helicopter coverage, and it brought great joy and pride to our local community.

Geothira SA, the municipal company that manages the volcanic park, along with the Municipality of Thira, provided full support to the producers, ensuring that everything needed was facilitated.

If you want to check it out there are numerous direct flights to Santorini from London all taking around four hours or less. At the time of writing there were return flights available for as little as £285 for June.

In terms of accomodation many people opt for Fira but a more budget friendly option is Katerados which is just a few minutes from Fira on the very regular buses, which only cost €2. There are very few taxis on the island so buses are the most efficient way to get around. This is a traditional village with astonishing views and architecture and some lovely restaurants and bars. Luxury accomodation is a fraction of the price of the neighbouring town and the whole island is acessible from there.

Santorini isn't cheap in terms of dining out or enjoying drinks, but there are bargains to be found if you look around. Do indulge in the seafood which is fresh daily and was cooked to perfection anywhere I tried it.

With the release of Sacrifice imminent interest in the island, along with prices are likely to go up so grab a bargain now while you can.
