Emmerdale and Coronation Street set to make history with huge announcement
ITV have announced it will be making a groundbreaking, never-seen-before move for its two long-running soaps.

ITV has announced that for the first time in British soap history, its flagship dramas Coronation Street and Emmerdale will come together in a one-off, hour-long special airing in January 2026. This historic crossover marks the launch of ITV1 and STV’s brand-new 'power hour' of soaps.
The news was shared on the channel's website, where it teased how "the combined production teams embark on an ambitious stunt that will have everlasting consequences for everyone involved". It also revealed that the special episode will feature a unique, self-contained storyline and use characters from both Manchester’s Corrie and Yorkshire’s Emmerdale.
It stated: "the consequences of the high-stakes drama will have repercussions for both communities and see them linked forever as familiar faces depart and exciting new characters arrive into both soaps".

The exciting development means viewers will get to see how their favourite soap stars interact as their their iconic worlds are blending in a unprecedented celebration of British soap culture. Behind the scenes, producers and writers have crafted a clever narrative that connects the two universes before returning each character to their usual setting.
Following the crossover, each soap will settle into its new schedule of 30-minute evening episodes: Emmerdale at 8:00pm, followed by Coronation Street at 8:30pm on ITV1 and STV. Episodes will also be available to stream earlier on ITVX and STV Player.
Adding an interactive twist, viewers will be invited to vote on which two characters – one from each show – they’d like to see share a scene. This initiative will launch next month via the official Coronation Street and Emmerdale social media channels on Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok.

The change to the schedule follows research from 2024 that showed 30-minute episodes attract larger audiences and better suit modern viewing habits. Together, Coronation Street and Emmerdale remain the UK’s most-watched soaps, drawing a combined weekly audience of over eight million viewers.
Over in the Dales, things have been kicking off ever since village baddie Joe Tate was shoved out of his bedroom window at Home Farm. On Monday evening (May 12), it was revealed that his girlfriend, Dawn Fletcher, was the culprit after discovering that he had threatended her daughter Clemmie and drugged his half brother Noah to try and steal his kidney.
The rest of the village remains in the dark about the truth, and this secret could continue to unfold over the coming months. The confession was made without any flashback scene or explanation, leaving viewers with a cliffhanger that merely confirmed Dawn's guilt.
