Sadiq Khan grilled by NHS worker on congestion charge

Coronation Street star Daniel Brockelbank hit out at London Mayor Sadiq Khan. After finishing a show, the star was slapped with a £90 fine for his car being in the congestion and ULEZ zone.

The actor typed on social media: "On 4/2/2025, my partner drove my car from Manchester to London, picking my mum and three of her friends up on the way to watch me in a performance of a musical at The Palladium.

"I paid almost £100 for ULEZ, congestion charge and parking. Today, I’ve been handed a £90 fine because my car was pictured leaving London at 00.02hrs on 5/2/2025. @MayorofLondon You, 'sir', are an absolute disgrace. This is robbery."

In response, his followers shared their anger by taking to the comments.

One wrote: "Sadiq Khan is the worst mayor London has ever seen."

Another replied: "Its the agenda 2030 version of Dick Turpin and highway robbery."

A third commented: "But just think how much cleaner the air will be after you pay the £90."

The Congestion Charge is a £15 daily charge if you drive within the Congestion Charge zone 7:00-18:00 Monday-Friday and 12:00-18:00 Saturdays and Sundays and bank holidays.

London's air, the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, every day of the year, except Christmas Day (25 December). The zone operates across all London boroughs, and does not include the M25.

If your vehicle doesn't meet the ULEZ emissions standards and isn't exempt, you must also pay a £12.50 daily charge to drive within the zone. This applies to cars, motorcycles, vans and specialist vehicles (up to and including 3.5 tonnes) and minibuses (up to and including 5 tonnes).

Over the last decade, London's pricing schemes have increasingly focused on tackling environmental challenges, particularly air quality, rather than congestion. The complementary Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) has helped improve air quality by accelerating the transition from older (dirtier) vehicles.

However, he has been accused of continuing to fight a “war on the motorist”, as he faced criticism over plans to remove the congestion charge exemption for electric vehicles.

The London mayor’s opponent in the May mayoral election, Tory assembly member Susan Hall, raised the issue at City Hall on Thursday, as she cited arguments from environmentalists who called the move “puzzling”.

Speaking at a Mayor’s Question Time session, Mr Khan said Transport for London (TfL) did not know and had not assessed the amount of money removing the discount would bring.

From December 25, 2025, TfL has announced that drivers who previously paid £10 for a year's exemption from the congestion charge will have to pay the standard £15 daily fee to drive in the central London zone.

The mayor said London is “leading the way” in electric vehicle use, with more than 20,000 public charging points installed across the capital.

He pointed out that the purpose of the congestion charge was primarily to reduce traffic levels in the city centre, rather than cut air pollution.
