Zoe Ball issued an apology to BBC Radio 2 viewers as she admitted she was struggling on air, telling fans she was "so dreadfully sorry".

The TV presenter said: "Look at me, I know this is radio, I just tried to put my glasses on and they're all over... here I am. Tina is taking a picture.

"I can't function today, I can't function. I'm so dreadfully sorry about that."

Zoe then managed to get herself back on track as she continued with the rest of the show in an upbeat mood. Her comments come just days after she made an emotional confession to Channel 5 star Jane McDonald, who appeared on the show to discuss her new book.

As Jane spoke about the book, which addresses the loss of her husband, Zoe told her: "I was just telling you there actually how much it meant to me reading this book.

"It made me laugh, it made me cry. It gave me an excuse to have a little cry, which we all need to do."

Jane's book Let The Light In shares what she has learned over the course of her life, as well as how she coped with the loss of her husband Eddie.

Zoe has been back on the show for the last two weeks after taking an extended break from the show on August 8. She sparked concerns with her lengthy six-week break, as fans and colleagues began to wonder where she was.

In August, BBC confirmed to Express.co.uk that she had planned holiday time and would be returning in September.

Like Jane, Zoe has been struggling with grief, as her beloved mother died in April this year, leading Zoe to take a prolonged period of absence from her BBC Radio 2 show.

She announced Julia's death in a heartbreaking statement, penning: ""Heartbreakingly our beautiful Mama Julia has been diagnosed with cancer. As many of you know from experience, these are extremely tough times. Mum is being incredibly brave.

"My brother Jamie & I are completely in awe of the brilliant doctors, nurses & support teams looking after Mum. Thank you.

"Sending out love to people reading this who are battling cancer, or awaiting diagnosis & also to the folk looking after their dear ones who are poorly,"
