Strictly: Amy Dowden discusses her return to the show

BBC Breakfast viewers were quick to offer their support as Amy Dowden offered an insight into her show return.

The professional dancer, 34, is set to make her return to the famous dance floor tonight after sadly missing out last year when she was diagnosed with stage three breast cancer just after her honeymoon.

But she is now competing for the Glitterball trophy alongside her celebrity dance partner for this series, JLS singer JB Gill. Ahead of the first live show for the show’s 20th anniversary series, Amy appeared on Saturday's episode of BBC Breakfast.

In a pre-recorded interview with David Sillito, the Welsh dancer gave an emotional insight into her return as she admitted that it ‘feels like coming home’.

David started off by saying: “For Amy Dowden this truly is part of an emotional journey as she returns to the show after treatment for cancer.”

He then turned to Amy and asked: “How are you?” Amy confirmed: “I’m much better thank you and what a difference a year can make.”

David replied: “It’s quite tough though coming back I’m guessing.” Amy said: “Um, it just feels like I’m coming back home and I didn’t really go away I guess because I was so lucky last year with the production team keeping me involved.”

She continued: “My Strictly family have been with me every step of the way so it doesn’t feel like I’ve been away. It’s different now because I get to come back dancing this year and I’ve got a fabulous partner and I’m going to make the most of every second because we don’t know what is around the corner.”

Elsewhere JLS band member JB spoke out about working with Amy as he revealed that he is ‘in great hands’.

Standing with his arm wrapped around Amy, JB said: “I was basically born on that big Saturday night of course with the X-Factor but I had a couple more people standing next to me then but I’m in great hands here with Amy.”

It come following recent abuse allegations against professional dancers. The controversy began when actress Amanda Abbington accused her partner Giovanni Pernice of abusive behaviour, which he denies.

Shortly after it was revealed that Graziano Di Prima was sacked for allegedly "kicking" his partner, Love Island star Zara McDermott, during rehearsals. The BBC have since confirmed that chaperones will be present in the rehearsal rooms for the new series.

BBC Breakfast airs from 6am on BBC One and Iplayer
