Bargain Hunt: Expert 'looks away' after huge loss

During Tuesday’s instalment of Bargain Hunt, BBC viewers were taken to North Yorkshire where two teams tried to earn the most profit from the items they brought.

Helping the red team, mother and son Sam and Dalton, was Richard Madley who wasted no time in trying to get them the best finds at the antiques fair.

After browsing some of the stalls, Richard quickly spotted a framed hand-stitched with the initials W and B in each corner.

However, the seller wasn’t able to specify when the item was made but told them it was being sold for £125.

Dalton commented: “That sounds like a lot.” As Sam questioned how much Richard believed it could sell at auction, he told her between £100 to £150.

Knowing it could tick off their big spend challenge set by BBC’s Natasha Raskin Sharp, they decided to explore the rest of the fair first.

Although as the clock started ticking down, they needed to buy one more item and decided to get the sampler.

In the end, they managed to haggle it down to £120 and were hopeful it would do well at auction.

However, when Natasha showed it to auctioneer Caroline Hawley, she wasn’t so sure the price they paid was worth it.

She said: “By the style of it, I can date that fairly accurately, mid-19th century. It’s lovely, it’s in great condition.

“It’s lacking just a bit. I’d like to know the name or the age or even where it was done. I’ve put it in at £30 to £50.”

Explaining the red team paid £120 for it, Caroline replied: “I think that’s top heavy.”

Sadly, it seemed as though the BBC star's thoughts were correct as she struggled to gain interest in it in the room.

Selling for £35, a massive loss of £90 Dalton told Natasha he’d take the blame as it was his decision.

As Richard turned around, Natasha said: “It’s a sting, Richard can’t even look, he can’t even look.”

In the end, it was the blue team who won the show as Natasha highlighted it was the sampler that put them at a massive disadvantage.

Bargain Hunt is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
