An Antiques Roadshow expert told their guest to “tear up” an old appraisal for a “rare treasure”.

The PBS daytime series sees item from all over the world brought in to be valued and this guest’s soup tureen was no different.

Having previously been owned by her great-aunt, the owner said: “It was in her estate and I was lucky enough to get it.

“I think she must have gotten it from her parents, my great-grandparents who travelled a great deal.”

It was clear that expert Jeanne Sloane couldn’t wait to jump in and praise the tureen not only for its beauty but for how rare it is.

She explained: “French 18th Century silver is extremely rare.

“This one was made in 1774 in Paris and most French silver that was made before the French Revolution was melted down, some of it to finance wars, some of it in the throws of the revolution.

“So even if we were in Paris today, I would be equally surprised to see a piece of 18th Century silver.

“It’s beautiful as you well know. What interests me about it is this typical decoration on the cover.

“All of these vegetables here were cast from life. You see a parsnip, a wonderfully open peapod with peas inside, it’s superb. And an artichoke and even a little pickle.

“These French terrines practically give you the recipe for the kind of soups that would have been contained."

The guest commented she had never used it for soup, with Sloane joking: “Well now you know how to make the recipe!"

She then dipped her hand into the tureen and took out a piece of paper which had something which really caught her attention.

Sloane commented: “At any rate, it is extremely beautiful and very, very rare.

“I notice here, this is interesting, you’ve had an old appraisal at $2,700.

“Well it must have been a while ago, because any 18th Century French soup terrine with this sculptural cover of such rarity and beauty, is going to sell today at auction for at least $30,000.”

“Really?”, the guest queried with Sloane replying: “Yes, I think you should tear this up.

“And you should call your insurance company, it’s an incredible treasure.”

“Well that’s amazing. I’ve always loved having it.”

“Are you going to use it for soup now?”, Sloane teased.

The guest laughed: “I don’t know, I don’t think for that amount of money you should be using it for soup!”

Antiques Roadshow is available to watch on PBS.
