Kate Garraway discusses letters of support after Derek doc
Good Morning Britain's Kate Garraway became emotional as she thanked the public for their response to her documentary about the last year of her husband Derek Draper's life. Kate Garraway: Derek's Story aired on ITV on Monday night (March 26) and although Kate had appeared on the show as a guest, this was her first time back at work.
Looking visibly tired after a whirlwind couple of days promoting the film she was asked by presenter Susanna Reid if she wanted to reflect on the reaction to it. "I want to say thank you..absolutely incredible kindness," she said.
"And, you know, that gives me hope for what I think has historically been an insolvable problem - that if you have that much feeling from people, when they're touched by it, that something can be done. And it also raised a lot of questions. It's raised a lot of anger. It's raised a lot of fury.
A social worker, wrote to me and said, 'I am furious with this situation, because I can't do anything about it.' And I guess we don't want to get into any situation of blame but it's people just now saying we have to do something.
"And also people for 20 years ago, lost their loved one, lost their partner and is still paying off the debt. And you think oh, my goodness, oh, my goodness. That's so tough," she said with her voice cracking.

"There are huge care costs [in the country], and there's a huge pull on the budget, but there's so much feeling like something must be done," she said.
Derek died in Janaury after a long battle with life changing CoVid related illness after catching the virus in March 2020.
Kate was very vocal about the cost of Derek's care in the documentary revealing that it cost £16,000 a month to pay for the help they required.
"Derek's care costs more than my salary from ITV and that's before you pay for a mortgage, before you pay for any household bills, before you pay for anything for the kids," she said.

"So we're at a crunch point. I am in debt and I can't earn enough money to cover my debt because I'm managing Derek's care.
"And I can't even use the money I do have to support Derek's recovery because it's going on the basics all the time."
Good Morning Britain is on ITV weekdays at 6am. Kate Garraway: Derek's Story is available to watch on ITVX.
