Antiques Roadshow saw the owner of a wine glass purchased for just 50p gobsmacked at its real origins from centuries ago.
Antiques Roadshow: Guest surprised by valuation of vase
An Antiques Roadshow guest couldn’t quite believe what she was hearing when an expert shared that her wine glass was hundreds of years old.
Gathering at the iconic Eden Project, fans of the BBC daytime series watched as experts appraised an array of unique treasures brought in by guests.
One of whom was a woman who handed over her glassware for expert Andy McConnell to give a valuation on.
She commented: “It belongs to my father, he saw it on a bric-a-brac stall, [the owner] wanted 10p, my father liked it so gave him 50p.”
To this, McConnell joked: “Oh I really like it, can I have it for a quid?”

It soon became apparent that there was a lot more than meets the eye when it came to the wine glass.
He explained that it was called a “heavy baluster” as it featured 30 percent lead and dated back to 30 years after the invention of lead crystals.
“George Ravenscroft perfected the formula for lead crystal in 1676, and this is 30 years afterwards”, McConnell said.
“It's about 1705-1710, which dates it at over 300 years old.”
McConnell exclaimed that it’s “rare”, at which point, the owner admitted that she was “shaking”.

In response, McConnell commented: “I’m feeling it too girl, I’m there with you!”
“This is a beautiful glass. Well, what’s it worth today?” he continued.
The guest nervously joked that she didn’t want to know before McConnell revealed with a smile that it would be valued at £2,000.
Clearly stunned by the appraisal, the woman automatically covered her mouth, exclaiming: “Oh no!”.
McConnell then went on to suggest: “Have a drink out of it tonight for Dad.”
