This Morning: Dermot O’Leary clashes with co-star over maternity pay
Dermot was presenting the ITV breakfast show alongside Alison Hammond. He vocalised his opinion which emphasised with woman who were demanding a higher amount.
However, Dermot butted heads with the former MP, 75, who suggested that the government shouldn’t be involved in the matter. He sat alongside presenter Sonia Sodha who initially mentioned the heated topic where things quickly turned sour.
She went suggested that maternity pay should be increased as once mothers return to the work place they usually are forced to go part-time. Sodha went on to say this then affects the gender pay gap as it gets wider for women.
During the discussion Dermot asked: “Is that the government supporting the industries?”. Before she could answer, Gyles sniped and was heard saying: “No, no, get government out of this.”
“So it’s in everybody’s interests to do this properly. The economy is created by the people out there doing the work!’, the Celebrity Gogglebox star added emphatically.
Dermot refused to let his view go, and responded: “The issue with that, Gyles, and, with respect, that’s where you and me fundamentally disagree.”

“No. This is completely wrong,” hit back Gyles. While Dermot simply said “I disagree”. Gyles continued: “This is why I am a capitalist and you are a socialist.”
“I’m not a socialist, Gyles, but I don’t agree with that in particular.” Dermot argued back.
Gyles then explained how a “good working environment makes people work better, longer, and more productively.” He went on to say, “so, if you look after your people well, you give them proper maternity leave.”
He decided that he did not want to attend solo, so thought it would be a nice idea to bring along his ITV co-stars Alison, 49 and Dermot.
As it turned out Alison even had the opportunity to chat with Camilla and discuss her programme For The Love Of Dogs. She took over the role following former host Paul O’Grady’s passing last year.
