Bargain Hunt fans 'turn off' as they say team 'needs heads checking' after huge mistake
Bargain Hunt sees two teams work with experts to try and find items that will make them a profit at auction.
Bargain Hunt: Guests quoted £75 for galvanised bath
BBC Bargain Hunt viewers couldn't watch as one team made a questionable purchase. The blue team, retired husband and wife Neil and Prue, were teamed with expert Richard Madeley for the popular auction show.
They were hoping to find items that would make them a profit at an antiques fair in Llandeilo to beat father and daughter team Rob and Charlotte - the red team. While both groups were drawn to a galvanised tin bath it was Prue and Neil who became rather fixated on it and kept coming back to it.
Prue enquired about the cost and came back to inform the others how much they would need to outlay for the item. "The lady said £75 and she did mention that it’s got the original cap to the outlet," she said showing them the feature.
While she was clearly excited by the bath, which was on display with plants in it showing one of its possible uses, Richard told them the realities they would face at auction with it. "In terms of profit at auction, when it goes to the auctioneer I imagine is going to say £40-£60, £50-£70 - that's going to be his estimate," he told them.
He suggested that they ask the vendor to hold it for 30 minutes while they had a further look around the market. However, they came back to it and purchased it with five minutes to spare.
It appeared that Richard's predictions were correct though as when it went to auction, despite even drawing remote bids, it sold for just £55.
This ate into the profit they had made from other items and they appeared disappointed by the outcome.
Viewers couldn't believe they had purchased it and took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to lambast their choice.
