SANDITON is the new Jane Austen adaptation from ITV, which has a start date this week. But when does the series start and how many episodes will the show have?
Sanditon: Trailer for new drama based on Jane Austen’s novel
ITV will release the first episode of Sanditon tonight (Sunday, August 25) at 9pm. The Jane Austen adaptation’s episode will air weekly on ITV and will be streaming on ITV Hub after airing. The series is based on a book that the author started and never finished, with all of the novel’s plot covered in the first episode.
When does Sanditon start?
Sanditon starts on Sunday, August 25 at 9pm on ITV.
Each episode of the series will be an hour long and will air over the next eight weeks.
ITV Hub will live stream each episode once it starts and episode will be available on the service’s catch-up service.
The series is based on the 11 chapters of Sanditon Jane Austen wrote before her death in 1817.
This story, however, is used up by the first half hour of the first episode according to i News.
Writer Andrew Davies said of this to The Sunday Times: ““What Austen did was set up a place and establish this wonderful group of characters very clearly, but she never really got the story going at all.”
However, he added that the fact that he only had the start of the story allowed him to take more liberties with the script.
He said: “We just sat around talking and thinking and saying, ‘Dare we do that? Yeah!’
How many episodes are in Sanditon?
Sanditon has eight-hour long episodes, which will air on Sundays on ITV.
The official synopsis for the eight episodes of Sanditon reads: “A chance accident brings Charlotte Heywood (played by Rose Williams) to Sanditon, a seaside resort on the cusp of dramatic change.
“Spirited and unconventional, Charlotte is initially keen to experience everything the town has to offer.
“But she is then shocked by its scheming and ambitious inhabitants, and intrigued by the secrets they share.
“Drama adapted from the unfinished novel by Jane Austen, starring Rose Williams, Theo James, Anne Reid, Kris Marshall and Kate Ashfield.”
After these eight episodes, Davies has expressed a willingness to make season two of the show.
He told Radio Times: “We haven’t had much chance to talk about it yet, but yeah, I do have a few ideas.
“And in fact the way we end series one, I hope we then get to a point where an audience says, ‘You can’t leave it at that!’
