James McAvoy reveals the IT clown is 'terrifying'
Dark Phoenix star James McAvoy will appear on Graham Norton tonight to discuss his newest film as super mind reader Professor X. The film sees Professor X struggle with student Jean Grey, who is fighting the influence of extraterrestrial parasite the Phoenix Force. McAvoy keeps his private life close to his heart and still lives with his ex-wife and son in London.
James McAvoy split up with wife Anne-Marie Duff in 2016, after 10 years of marriage.
The couple met on the set of Shameless in 2004, and have a son, Brendan, who is five years old.
One source revealed in 2016 he planned to live with his wife “for the foreseeable future”.
This was mainly for their son, who Ms Duff said is the couple’s “biggest priority”.
In 2016, a source close to the couple said: “They’ve decided to stay where they are for the time being and are trying to minimise disruption at home.
“James will be there for the foreseeable future. It’s completely amicable and they’re still getting on well.
“So despite all the news breaking, they’ve decided to keep themselves at their home in London with their son.
“To all intents, this seems to be the epitome of the perfect break-up.”
The couple later released their own statement on the matter, where they said the relationship is based on “continued friendship”.
The statement read: “It is with tremendous sadness that we have come to the decision to divorce.
“We enter this next phase with continued friendship, love and respect for one another and the shared focus of caring for our son.”
Since his divorce, James has enjoyed a meteoric rise into Hollywood, with leading parts in a number of major blockbusters.
The actor is appearing in the latest X Men film as Charles Xavier, a character he took over from Sir Patrick Stewart in 2014.
Although the actor enjoys playing Professor X, he said he feels he wants to be challenged with roles.
Talking to the Guardian, he said: “Even though I’m established, even though I’ve got X-Men behind me and it’s helped me buy my house, I always feel like I need to take a challenge.”
He has taken the role of Lord Asriel in the BBC America adaptation of Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials.
Earlier this year, the actor also revealed he had a major health scare on his 40th birthday.
After having a biopsy for a shadow on his lung, he contracted a nasty infection.
Talking to Men’s Journal, he said: “It nearly killed me.
“It was very scary.
“A terrifying f*****g thing to go through.”
