We will have independence! Catalonian MEP says region must DEFY EU & Spain over vote
CATALONIA must defy Spain and the European Union and have independence tomorrow as Catalan politicians need to uphold their promises to the people, according to an MP from the region.
Catalonian MEP: Declaration of independence must happen now
Alfred Bosch, MEP for pro-independence party Republican Left of Catalonia, said independence had to be applied as set out in the Catalan parliament before the referendum vote.
Catalonia had been warned repeatedly by the European Union and Spain to ignore the result of the constitutionally-illegal vote last Sunday.
Speaking on the Today programme on BBC Radio 4, Mr Bosch said the Catalan government “would deliver”.
He said: “There was a law that was passed in the Catalan parliament before the referendum was held specifying exactly what would happen if the ‘no’ vote happened to win or if the ‘yes’ vote happened to win.
Alfred Bosch said the Catalan government would deliver independence
The ‘yes’ won, so that has to be applied and the Catalan government, of course, will deliver
“The ‘yes’ won, so that has to be applied and the Catalan government, of course, will deliver.”
Asked if it had to be applied tomorrow, he added politicians wanted to “fulfil their promises”.
He said: “I think we should respect that. This law which was approved by a majority in the Catalan parliament, stated that it had to be approved less than 48 hours after the final results were published.
“That was done already, so it has to be done, yes, it has to be done fast.”
Catalonia is set to ignore threats from Brussels and Madrid and officially declare independence from Spain.
The region’s leader has now confirmed independence will be declared - whether Spain or the EU like it or not.
Carles Puigdemont said the region’s rules stated a declaration of independence was the legal next step after the ‘yes’ victory last week.
He said: “The declaration of independence, that we don't call a 'unilateral' declaration of independence, is foreseen in the referendum law as an application of the results.
“We will apply what the law says.”
