A POLICE officer has been killed in Kirkersville, Ohio and at least one other person has been taken to hospital with injuries after a man opened fire in a nursing home.

The victim police officer was being treated in hospital for his injuries and has since been pronounced dead.
It has been reported that the gunman has been shot.
The gunman opened fire at a nursing and rehabilitation centre in Kirkersville.
The shooting happened in Kirkersville, Ohio
The shooting happened at Pine Kirk Care Centre and it was reported at 7:50am local time.
The local primary schools have been on lockdown while police investigate.

It is not known the condition of the other people injured in the incident.

There is a heavy police presence in the area.
The US senator for Buckeye State, Rob Portman, has tweeted: “My office and I stand ready to help our officers and all those affected in Kirkersville in any way possible.”
The Pine Kirk Care Centre nursing home in Kirksville is a small facility of 24 beds.
