200 people are occupying a camp designated for 30
It is the first time violence has erupted in the shanty Norrent-Fontes camp, where 200 people are sleeping, which sits 35 miles south-east of the Calais Jungle.
A few weeks ago the mayor of Norrent-Fontes and a handful of local residents tried to have the makeshift camp – which was originally built to shelter 30 migrants, not 200 – dismantled; but a local court refused to do so on grounds that the migrants had “nowhere else to go”.
According to government figures, 33 migrants have died since January 2015 in the Calais region alone.
