Experts said the sturdy barrier separating her flat from the rest of the apartment block in Paris could “easily” be secured from within.
And it sparked speculation the raid, in which the mega-rich TV reality star was held at gunpoint and feared she would be raped, was an inside job.
A source close to the investigation said: “This is the baffling part of the inquiry. We are dealing with a young woman who was sleeping alone with a hugely valuable amount of jewellery.
“She would never open an easily locked armoured door in the middle of the night, so who did?”
The riddle was highlighted as details emerged of an apparent series of shortcomings – including a lack of CCTV cameras – over security surrounding the US socialite.

The gunman was one of a five-strong gang who escaped with a jewellery box containing gems worth £5.2million and a £3.5million ring.
She would never open an easily locked armoured door in the middle of the night, so who did?
It is believed the ring was a 20-carat diamond one given to her by rapper husband Kanye West only weeks ago.
Detectives are satisfied the robbers, dressed as police, could have easily tricked their way into the apartment block and overpowered a lone porter.
But with no signs of forced entry, they are still trying to work out how the gang beat the armoured door at the Hotel de Pourtales apartments.
According to reports, Kim’s stylist Simone Harouche was also staying in the flat but did not know anything about the attack until later.

During her ordeal Kim was trussed up with plastic ties and dumped in a bath. She is believed to have wriggled free and screamed for help from a balcony.
Detectives admit the crime is one of the strangest they have had to deal with in recent years.
They assumed Kim would have been surrounded by her own security guards and would never have had such valuable jewellery while sleeping alone.

The gang struck as her bodyguard Pascal Duvier, who boasted days earlier that he never left her side, was at a nightclub with her sister Kourtney.
There was also concern that Kim fled to the US on a private jet just a few hours later, having given a statement but not been interviewed at length.
Meanwhile, a former French crimebusting chief said the block’s owners should have “tripled” security, with street patrols and guards at every exit.
