Seven masterpieces stolen in daring raid
SEVEN masterpieces including priceless paintings by Picasso and Monet were stolen yesterday in one of the biggest art heists in history.
The paintings were snatched at 3am from the Kunsthal museum in Rotterdam – thought to have an impregnable
security system.
Originals by Henri Matisse, Paul Gauguin and Lucien Freud were among the haul of iconic works – which experts say are impossible to value accurately though are certain to be worth tens of millions of pounds.
Experts believe they had inside information
All the privately-owned works were on loan for an exhibition.
The burglars did trigger the alarm system but by the time police arrived they, and their haul, were long gone.
Experts believe they had inside information.
The heist is being ranked alongside the theft of The Scream by Edvard Munch from an Oslo museum in 2004. It was later recovered.
