Donald Trump is in China for a multi-day state visit that includes a high-stakes meeting with China's leader Xi Jinping.
The presidents will take part in talks at the Great Hall of the People today, after they had an extravagant meeting outside the steps as children lined the area with bouquets and troops stood guard.
In opening remarks both leaders have shared kind words to one another that place China as an equal to the US as talks begin.
President Xi Jinping called for China and the US to be "partners not rivals" with Trump claiming their relationship will be "better than ever before".
Despite this, tough topics are to be addressed during the talks, including tariff, the Iran war and Taiwan.
Trump has said his focus will be on trade "more than anything else" with Xi as talks will be held today.

Trump and Xi both avoid questions about Taiwan
Trump and Xi both avoided questions about Taiwan when asked by reporters.
When Trump was asked if he had talked about Taiwan, he continued his previous sentiment saying “great place, incredible, China’s beautiful”.
When asked again, the US president just looked straight ahead, as did Xi.
The two men then turned to walk towards the steps when asked a third time.

President Trump has returned to his car, according to the White House press pool.
Later today he will attend a state banquet held in his honour.


Trump's says talks went 'great'
As Trump at Xi are the the Temple of Heaven reporters asked if the presidents had discussed Taiwan, but neither leaders responded.
When asked how the talks had progressed Trump replied with a simple one word response, "great".

Trump and Xi have arrived at a major tourist attraction and ancient complex of temples in Beijing, the Temple of Heaven.
It was announced two days ago that the US president would be visiting and the site would be closed to the public.

Xi to meet with US business leaders
Following the two-hour meeting with Trump, Xi is now meeting with US business leaders to discuss firms' prospects in the country.
He says that American companies have been a huge part of China's growth, which has proven beneficial to both sides, ading that Beijing welcomes the US to strengthen reciprocal cooperation, according to Chinese state media.
With Trump came top business, including Nvidia's Jensen Huang and Tim Cook from Apple and Elon Musk.
Talks between Trump and Xi end
The bilateral talks have ended. The talks between the two leaders lasted double the scheduled time, at roughly two hours.

Chinese state media CCTV has posted clips of some top business leaders entering the room where the two presidents are having talks.
They were later seen leaving and questioned by reporters about the event.


Taiwan issue could cause conflict between US and China
President Xi is reportedly focusing on the "Taiwan issue" as the "most important issue in China-US relations", according to Chinese state media.
"If it is handled well, bilateral relations can remain generally stable. If it is not handled properly, the two countries could collide or even come into conflict, pushing the entire China–US relationship into a very dangerous situation," Xi says, according to state media.
The Chinese leader added that Taiwan independence is "fundamentally incompatible" with peace in the strait, which he sees as the "greatest common ground between China and the United States."
Trump says its 'honour' to be Xi's friend
In Trump's opening remarks, he says it is "an honour" to be Xi's friend.
"We've gotten along, when there were difficulties we worked it out. I would call you and you would call me," Trump says.
"People don't know, whenever we had a problem we worked it out very quickly."
"I say it to everybody, you're a great leader."
Referring to those he brough with him, the US president adds: "Only the top people here today to pay respects to you.
"It's an honour to be with you, it's an honour to be your friend," he says.
He adds that US-China relations will be "better than ever before".

US and China have "more common interests than differences"
In his opening remarks, Xi noted that "the whole world is watching our meeting".
The Chinese leader said: "The world has come to a new crossroads. Can China and the US overcome the Thucydides trap and create a new paradigm of relations?
"Can we meet global challenges together and provide more stability for the world? Can we, in the interest of our world, of our two peoples, and the future of humanity, build a brighter future for our bilateral relations?
"These are the questions vital to history, to the world, and to the people. They are the questions of our times that you and I need to answer as leaders of major countries."
"I always believe that our two countries have more common interests than differences. Success in one is an opportunity for another, and a stable bilateral relationship is good for the world.
"China and the US both stand to gain from cooperation and lose from confrontations.
"We should be partners not rivals, we should help each other succeed and prosper and find the right way for major countries to get along with each other in the new era."

Trump has been welcomed by Xi at the Great Hall of the People.
The pair quickly locked in an extended handshake, during which Trump repeatedly patted Xi's hand and forearm while they exchanged words.
Trump then shook the hands of other gathered Chinese officials.
He stood solemny alongside Xi in the center of the plaza as a marching band played the U.S. and Chinese national anthems.

Live coverage of Donald Trump's visit to China was halted abruptly after a "medical emergency" occurred this evening.
The horrifying moment came during CBS' broadcast from Taiwan, as anchor Tony Dokoupil discussed the buildup to the Trump-Xi summit.
The incident happened on “CBS Evening News” where the anchor was said “We are going to take a quick break. We have a medical emergency here,” Dokoupil said. “We are calling a doctor.”
