New data has revealed which European country has the most tight-fisted tourists.

According to the World Tourism Organisation (UNTWO), it is Polish holidaymakers who spend the least amount of cash when they go on their holidays.

In 2019, the Poles spent €8.8billion (£7.4billion), down from €9.1billion (£7.6billion) in 2018, which was a record figure. In 2022, they spent even less, the study showed, as they spent around €185 (£155) per person in other countries while visiting for tourism purposes, totalling up to €7.2billion (£6.07bn)

The most popular destinations with Poles were Italy, Germany, the UK, Turkey and Croatia.

Second on the list is Greece. Tourists from Greece spent an average of €193 (£162) per person when travelling abroad, totalling €1.9billion (£1.6billion) spent in 2022.

The UNTWO found that both Poles and Greeks are showing a growing interest in Albania for their holidays.

Albania was Greece's most popular destination, followed by Turkey, Italy, Bulgaria and the UK.

Hungarians, Bulgarians, and Croatians were the next three nationalities on the list, spending between €236 (£198) and €374 (£314) on their holidays.

Hungarians spent €2.2billion (£1.8billion), with their favourite destinations being Croatia, Austria, Italy, Romania, and the UK.

Bulgarians spent an average of €239 (£201) with a total of €1.5billion (£1.2billion). Their favorite destinations were Greece, Turkey, Romania, Hungary, and the UK.

Croatians spent a total of €1.4billion (£1.18billion) in 2022. They favoured France, Slovenia, Austria, and Germany.

The UK is up there with the most flamboyant tourists when it comes to spending. In 2023, British tourists spent a total of £72.4billion on trips abroad.

This resulted in an average of £839 per person.
