The earthquake follows just over a week after a strong 7.2 magnitude quake struck the same region at the same depth on August 17, which triggered a volcanic eruption.

The earthquake hit early afternoon on Friday, August 30th, 2024, at 3:24 pm local time at a moderately shallow depth of 51 km.
