Tucked in the serene woods of Vettelschloss, near the vibrant city of Cologne, lies a remarkable enclave that feels just like a bustling London high street.

The Little Britain Inn, a captivating establishment run by Gary Blackburn and his wife Monika, offers an authentically British experience in rural Germany, making it a beloved destination for expats and tourists alike.

At the heart of this English haven are three full-size iconic red double-decker buses, a tank repurposed as a peace memorial, and a shrine dedicated to the late Princess Diana.

The inn, which doubles as a bar and hotel, serves up full English breakfasts and some of the best fish and chips in the area, creating a cosy, familiar atmosphere for its visitors.

Interestingly, creating a British Inn was never part of Gary Blackburn’s plan.

Initially, Gary acquired the tank and other British memorabilia during Brexit, fearing that it might be challenging to obtain these items in the future.

However, the local council took issue with Gary storing the tank in his backyard, citing its proximity to a nature reserve.

Unwilling to part with his collection, Gary devised a clever workaround. He purchased the neighbouring hotel, moved the tank 300 metres away to a different jurisdiction, and adorned it with a massive Union Jack and white doves, transforming it into a monument to peace.

Gary told the Daily Star: “My father always said improvise, adapt and overcome. We will never surrender! And I won't let the council bully me, I outflanked them.”

What began as a necessity soon turned into an unexpected opportunity for Gary and Monika.

Despite initial reluctance, they embraced their new roles as hoteliers and restaurateurs, attracting visitors from all over who are eager to experience their unique blend of British culture and hospitality.

The hotel boasts an array of themed rooms, each meticulously decorated to celebrate British icons such as Mr Bean, Queen Elizabeth II, Harry Potter, and Sherlock Holmes.

Monika, who had no prior culinary training, has become a skilled chef, thanks to YouTube tutorials.

Her afternoon teas have become especially popular, often booking out well in advance.

Gary said: "She used to go out on the jobs with me as well and do the trees and that. So it's all a new thing for us. But now the afternoon teas are going quite crazy. We get booked out so we can't take any more! It’s really busy on the weekends, and it’s full during the week too!”

Gary’s ultimate dream is to host a member of the British Royal Family at the inn to showcase his dedication to British culture.

Although this ambition has yet to be realised, Gary remains hopeful. Hinting that even a visit from Jeremy Clarkson would be a significant achievement, he said: "Somebody obviously who likes, you know, cars and things. I've got an old Rolls Royce as well. Hillman Minx, Morris, Mayor and things like that."
