Moment guards shoot down apparent Houthi sea drone

This is the duck-and-cover moment a huge explosion ripped through a pirate sea drone after it was blasted with machine guns from a cargo ship.

In dramatic footage a speedboat reportedly packed with explosives can be seen hurtling towards the hull of the larger vessel as her crew frantically fire back from the deck.

Posted by maritime website Navy Lookout on X, the video then shows the unmanned speedboat getting closer and closer to the cargo ship before in an instant it is obliterated by an explosion.

It's reported the speedboat was a drone of the type used by the Iran-backed Houthi rebel group who have been targeting international shipping on the busy sea lanes of the Red Sea.

The Houthis, who have been involved in a bloody civil war in Yemen, were bombed by the RAF and US forces in May in retaliation for repeated attacks on commercial cargo ships and for attacks on Israel since the Gaza war began.

The cargo ship in the video has not been named and it is not clear when the incident happened.

During the firefight, two crew members, who are reportedly Ukrainians but speaking in Russian, can be seen pointing their weapons towards the speedboat as another films the combat unfold.

When the pirate drone explodes the crew member filming takes cover inside the bridge of the ship exclaiming at the size of the blast from the attacking vessel.

When he points the camera back to where the speedboat was only a smoldering ruin can be seen.

Houthi pirates have increasingly been using drones, or uncrewed surface vessels (USV), to attack shipping in the Red Sea which lies off the coast of Yemen.

The stretch of water is a vital link between Europe and Asia as shipping heads towards to the Suez Canal link which takes them into the Mediterranean.

Last month a 750ft Greek-owned cargo ship was sunk in the Red Sea by a Houthi USV attack. The rebel group claim they are targetting vessels linked to Britain, the United States and Israel.
