An incredible 2-666 mile train journey spanned across the world's highest mountains is an impressive feat of engineering and an important transportation link in China. Shanghai-Lhasa Railway covers some of the most spectacular scenery in Tibet.

The railway crosses the Tibetan Plateau, reaching elevations of over 5,000 metres (16,404 feet).

It includes the Tanggula Pass, which, at 5,072 metres (16,640 feet), is the highest railway point in the world.

Passengers on the Shanghai-Lhasa route can enjoy breathtaking views of the diverse landscapes, from urban areas to the vast, remote wilderness of the Tibetan Plateau.

Trains are equipped with modern amenities, including sleeping berths, dining cars, and entertainment options, to ensure a comfortable journey on this long route.

The railway has boosted economic development in Tibet by facilitating trade, tourism, and the movement of goods and people.

It has also made Lhasa and other parts of Tibet more accessible to tourists.

The railway's construction and operation have been controversial, with concerns about its impact on Tibet's environment and cultural heritage, as well as its role in integrating Tibet more tightly with the rest of China.

Engineers had to overcome significant challenges posed by permafrost, ensuring the stability of the tracks in extreme conditions.

Passenger cars are equipped with oxygen supply systems to help travellers cope with the high altitude and thin air.

Tourists who have visited the railway have called it a once-lifetime experience.

One user wrote on TripAdvisor: “This is a really awe-inspiring railway road connection with China to Tibet, along the road the elevation averages about 3000m, can see many magnificent views, and Tibet antelope .snow mountains lakes vast plain.”

Another said: “I took the Lhasa Express from Lhasa to Xining at 4.30pm on 31st December 2017. Ensure you have a trustworthy agent preferably based in Lhasa to arrange your tickets for you. Tickets sell out very fast with soft sleepers selling the fastest. Your agent will know when to book for the dates you wish to travel.

They added: “The journey itself is lovely, relaxing and very enjoyable. I must say I really felt it when we climbed higher through the night and I would recommend staying in your bunk at these times as it can be."
