Sri Lanka shooting leaves one dead
A 60-year-old woman has been killed in Sri Lanka after gunmen opened fire on a bus carrying supporters of the country's main opposition presidential candidate, Sarath Fonseka.
Police say at least nine others were injured in the attack, which happened in the south of the country just weeks ahead of the upcoming presidential elections - scheduled for January 26.
Government officials have yet to comment on the shooting, but Fonseka's office blamed supporters of the administration for the attack.
The US Embassy said in a statement that it was "deeply concerned by the escalating violence surrounding the upcoming presidential elections, particularly reports of today's fatal shooting".
"This is the first nationwide election in a peaceful, united Sri Lanka in several decades. We hope that the election is conducted freely, fairly and without violence," the statement added.
