When you buy a bottle of oil, it often comes complete with a pull tab.

This means the top of the bottle pulls off before you're able to pour the oil when cooking. But, though you may think this is just another way to keep your oil fresh, it's not at all.

The tab actually helps to make life a lot easier for you, and it's recently been revealed on Instagram. It turns out we've been missing a pretty big trick for years, and it's been right under our noses.

A video shared by cookistwow revealed the tab actually has a really clever function, as it allows you to control how much oil you use. If you've spent years throwing it in the bin, now is the time to stop.

If you make use of the clever little tab it'll change the way you cook your food forever.

In the post, the presenter wrote: "Have you ever wondered what are the plastic pull tabs on the oil bottles for? Pull off the tab on the bottle, flip it over and place it back inside.

"This helps control the amount of oil poured out. If you’ve always thrown that piece out, you won’t anymore!

"Have you ever used them this way? Let us know in the comments."

More than 4,000 people have liked the clever video so far – and they can't believe they never realised the little tab has a use. When you watch the video, everything starts to make sense pretty quickly, as it's easy to see how it works.

You'll never throw out the tab again once you've seen the super handy hint.

One person said: "I do this and it’s a game changer. It’s never fallen back out of the bottle or into the bottle like some people think. It keeps the bottle from getting all messy and so much easier to control the flow of the oil."

Another wrote: "Wait! What?" A third replied: "Great idea - I am going to do that next time I get a bottle with that tab."

Meanwhile, a fourth commented: "WHAT!!! My life is complete."

Even though many people thought it was super clever, some did wonder how fool-proof the technique is. People seem to be worried they'd "make a mess" if they tried it, and said there's potential for spillage if you squeeze too hard.

Others also said they don't have any issues when it comes to controlling how much oil they use, so not everyone is convinced. Even so, it's worth giving a whirl if you want to try and become more of a whizz in the kitchen.
