An optical illusion has set the internet alight, leaving viewers sharply divided over the hidden numbers concealed within the perplexing puzzle.

The hypnotic image features a circle filled with condensing black swirls, yet what has truly captured people's attention is the confusion surrounding what lies within the circle — specifically, which number is hidden inside.

Twitter user Benonwine posed the question to followers: "Do you see a number? If so, what number?"

Users flocked online to share which numbers they could see, and marvelled at the sheer variety of different responses.

Reactions varied wildly across social media, with some expressing concern over their eyesight while others pondered how the illusion reflected deeper truths about perception.

One user replied: "45 283...and what's the catch? Should I book an appointment with my GP? I can only see 528. Does that mean anything about my eyesight?" another person tweeted.

One Twitter user put forward the theory that the number of digits visible depends on an person's contrast sensitivity.

Meanwhile, others resorted to image editing software in a bid to unravel the mystery by enhancing the image. The optical illusion even inspired some rather philosophical musings amongst viewers.

One user wrote: "The longer you look the more you see. There is life in the shadows, so don't let yourself by blinded by the light."

Others simply saw the funny side, with one joking: "I could see all the numbers when I was p****d last night. Today, I can only see 3 numbers."

Another rounded off with a laughing emoji, joking: "My research is now complete: You can see more when you're p****d."
