Officers are on scene and highways authorities said snowplough and gritter crews were working hard to clear the carriageway but have just announced the road will be closed for the rest of the day.
A spokeswoman said: “The A1 is still impassable in this area. Officers and Highways staff are trying to safely move stranded vehicles in convoy.”

Highways England said nearby roads including the A19 in County Durham and A66 at Scotch Corner were impassible due to "several" traffic incidents and treacherous driving conditions.
The southbound carriageway of the A1 is also closed between Colsterworth and the Lincolnshire-Leicestershire border at South Witham.
Lincolnshire Police said the the closure was due to a jack-knifed lorry and expect the road to be blocked for around three hours while recovery teams work to clear the area in difficult conditions.
The North East has been battered by the Beast from the East
Motorists have again been warned not to travel unless their journeys are absolutely essential.
Cleveland Police said yellow and amber warnings remained in place across the North East and urged people to stay at home.
A spokesman said: “For those who must travel, allow more time for it and exercise extra care and patience on the roads.
“Ensure your vehicle is winter-driving ready by checking tyre pressures, brakes and washer fluid.
“Make sure all snow is cleared from lights, windscreens, windows and the vehicle roof before setting off.”
