A yellow weather warning for thunderstorms has been issued for Friday, and people are cautioned to stay at home.

The weather is expected to bring in heavy rainfall, lightning, and potential flash flooding expected.

The warning has been issued for East Midlands, East of England, London & South East England, South West England, Wales and the West Midlands.

According to the BBC weather, the thundery showers will become more widespread from midday, impacting a broad area within the warning zone.

The warning is in effect from 12:00 BST to 20:00 BST on Friday.

While many areas may remain dry, thunderstorms and heavy showers are expected to bring potential disruptions to a number of locations.

The storms could result in:

  • Damage: Lightning strikes may cause some damage to buildings and structures.
  • Power and Services: Short-term power outages and disruptions to other services are likely.
  • Transport Delays: Train services may experience delays, and driving conditions could be hazardous due to spray, standing water, and possible hail. This could lead to longer journey times for both car and bus travellers.

As the day transitions into the evening, the intensity of the showers is expected to ease, and conditions should gradually improve.

However, residents are advised to stay alert and prepared for sudden changes in weather.

The public is advised to take precautions such as avoiding outdoor activities, seeking shelter in sturdy building or hard topped vehicle, and staying away from windows during the storm.

According to the National Weather Service, lightning strikes can occur up to 10 miles from a storm, so head indoors as soon as you hear thunder.

Additionally, you should avoid water and electronics.

There is a risk of being electrocuted during a thunderstorm if you are near running water or using electronics as they both conduct electricity.

Avoid using running water or electronic devices during storms, as both can conduct electricity.

In the case of a flood, you should also never attempt to drive through flooded roads.
