Met Office names 27 areas facing 20C mini heatwave as UK hotter than Greece - full list

Parts of the UK could be hotter than Athens.

A whopping 27 areas of the UK are set to be hotter than Greece on Friday as temperatures prompt safety warnings. In Glasgow, the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) has warned of a "very high" risk of wildfires as temperatures reach 20C today - higher than the 19C expected in Athens. Over the weekend, temperatures in the Scottish city could reach 21C.

The fire service upgraded the risk to "extreme" across western areas, which "can spread, causing a large amount of damage". Elsewhere, the Met Office pinpointed 26 other areas that are due to reach 20C - from Liverpool in the north to Bude in the south. Its forecast for Friday adds: "Any mist, fog and low cloud in the east will clear quickly after the sunrise.

"Another bright and sunny day is then expected with temperatures slightly higher than on Thursday. Generally less windy, helping the warmer feel of the day."

Met Office deputy chief forecaster Steven Keates said high pressure would "remain broadly in charge" through the weekend and "most places will remain dry with a fair amount of sunshine".

He explained: "As is often the case, there are a few exceptions, with cloudier conditions for some at times and patchy rain possible for northern Scotland later in the weekend.

"But in the sunshine, we’re expecting temperatures to steadily climb, likely peaking in the low 20s on Friday and over the weekend. Onshore breezes will keep some coastal areas somewhat cooler."
