A meteorologist has pinpointed which region of the UK is most likely to be hit with snow as temperatures drop this winter.

Jim Dale of British Weather Services told Express.co.uk that snow could be "hit and miss" this winter but added that it is most likely to arrive after New Year.

He added that the north could be the most likely destination for any snowy conditions that arrive from Scandinavia or Siberia.

Mr Dale explained: "As for snow, when it’s winter it’s part of the equation, likely far more miss than hit with the north slightly more at risk, as per.

"Normal situation so we have to wait for the cold plunges. Any lasting ice or snow coming out of Scandinavia or Siberia is very unlikely until after New Year and even then only within a certain ordinarily elusive setup."

This comes as weather forecaster Exacta Weather predicts that snowfall is “on the cards”.

Exacta adds that it forecasts with “high confidence” that “colder conditions and widespread snow events."

They forecast Sudden Stratospheric Warmings (SSW) for November, January and February.

Exacta added: “At least three cold and snowy periods are on the cards regardless of any earlier SSW occurrences, maybe even more if the ones of moderate confidence also come to fruition and the SSW event does occur.”

While Brits brace for the colder weather, forecasts are showing that temperatures will reach 21C on Wednesday in parts of the UK.

Mr Dale added: "This Wednesday, the southeast and East Anglia will hit between 19C and 21C C due to a southerly airflow out of North Africa.

"Everywhere else will be cooler with rain. Might get a somewhat more universal repeat Monday and Tuesday next week with temperatures between 17C and 20C. "
